Hike your own hike (HYOH) is a term regularly thrown around by hikers and backpackers and even became the title of a book. Recently some friends and myself were planning out a day hike at Ohiopyle State Park. This trip will be shared soon I just wanted to get this post out first. When we were all planning to go on this trip a friend of ours was being discouraged from going by some others he knew. Well that kind of set off this post so I hope you enjoy it.
Who is hiking for? Is it only for those who are thin and in great shape, or maybe not even thin but just for those who are active? NO, hiking is for everyone who has a desire to get outdoors. This being said I don’t feel there is an “in shape enough” to go hiking. That is not saying health concerns should not be taken into consideration when you are planning a hike for those who may have some medical needs. A hike can be planned with terrain that will work for anyone. Hiking is also a great form of exercise for someone who is looking to get into shape since it offers an amount of solitude someone may enjoy that they won’t get at the gym. It also offers a peaceful relaxation and calming environment that anyone can enjoy that gives room for reflection and stress relief.
This for me is the meaning of the term “hike your own hike” that is so common amongst avid hikers and backpackers. Some may like long adventurous backpacking trips such as the Appalachian Trail while others may just like a half mile nature loop in a local park. I tend to love climbing large rocks and taking the hard route where someone else may like taking a smooth trail. It is your hike. There shouldn’t be a rush or a problem with taking a break for a fellow hiker. In fact during these breaks we took the opportunity to relax and enjoy views and spots many times we would have passed. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter as long as you use smart planning tools and stay safe. There is no in shape for hiking. In fact the best exercise to get in shape for hiking is smaller trips while you build your skills and abilities. So before you consider letting someone else tell you that you can’t go hiking or your to out of shape to go hiking remember It’s your journey, hike your own hike.
Again, thank you everyone for liking my page I hope your enjoying it and thank you for listening to my little rant.
