Adventures in your own neighborhood.
Any time I think about an adventure I think of going someplace far away, new, and exciting. This is not always the case. Many of the easiest and most interesting places to explore are right in your own neighborhood. Even though these short local trips may not be as exciting as going to a further away destination they can be very important for several reasons.
First, smaller adventures give you an opportunity to test out any new gear you add to your collection in a more controlled environment. Testing your gear in a controlled environment decreases your chances of having complications or gear failures when you are more dependent on your equipment.
Practicing using your gear will help you master the skills needed to use it efficiently. An example of this could be using a fling and steel to start a fire. As easy as this can be for a experienced outdoorsman it can be very difficult for someone who has never done it before. Not being able to successfully start a fire with one is not something you want to find out when your are on a backpacking trip and discover your matches have gotten ruined in the rain. Remember practice and experience will make you much more efficient with your outdoors skills.
Finally, one very important aspect of exploring the outdoors is being fit and healthy enough for the activity you wish to partake in. Many outdoor activities carry a certain amount of risk, and not being in shape for these activities can only increase these risks. Because of this using smaller trips to improve your physical health will keep you fit enough to partake in longer trips so you can minimize the inheritated risks.
These reasons are why you should spend time outdoors exploring every week. This is time to practice and hone your skills. You also need this time to help you remain at your top fitness level. Until next time get outdoors and explore your neighborhood and the areas nearest to you.
